The international Watkins Glen circuit hosted the “Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen”, the seventh round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar 2024 championship. Matteo Cairoli shared the Lamborghini SC63 of Iron Lynx with Andrea Caldarelli in the GTP category. The event format saw a six-hour race with a qualifying round of 15 minutes.
Caldarelli was the man for the job when it came to qualifying the Lamborghini #63, obtaining the ninth position with a lap of 1:32.923. Caldarelli also started the race, driving for the first two hours. Then, the driver from Como took the wheel of the car in eighth position, gained by his teammate, until his stint was neutralized by a full course yellow deployment. Later it started raining, but Cairoli managed to gain several positions, bringing Iron Lynx up to the fifth position, later third when the pit stop dance began.
Unluckily, after the restart – due to another full course yellow deployed as the rain saw some crashes – the driver from Como received a drive-through penalty because of an overtake made during the neutralization of the race. There was a misunderstanding with the pit crew, but it actually cost an important finish for the team in the GTP class. Further bad luck came a few moments later, when the Lamborghini had to retire due to technical issues.
Matteo Cairoli had to settle for a retirement, not being able to reach the result he hoped for in the championship. However, he is already focused on the next IMSA 2024 race, scheduled for September 22 in Indianapolis. Before that, he will be heading to the 24h of Spa, where he will drive Iron Lynx’s Lamborghini GT3 in the upcoming week.
