Bittersweet retirement for Matteo Cairoli at Indianapolis

The fourth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Endurance Cup, widely known as the “Battle on the Bricks”, went underway at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Matteo Cairoli participated alongside his teammates Andrea Caldarelli and Romain Grosjean at the wheel of the Lamborghini SC63 of Iron Lynx, in the GTP class. In qualifying, Grosjean completed a lap of 1:15:495, securing the tenth spot on the grid, just under a second from the pole position. The Frenchmen also had the honor of starting the race, which was characterized by rain and a long neutralization in its initial part.

Iron Lynx’s Lamborghini managed to catch up to first place, thanks to an incredible pace in the wet, sparking hopes for an excellent performance at the Indianapolis circuit. Matteo Cairoli was given the wheel during the middle phase of the race, continuing his teammate’s work by remaining in the fight for the win despite a drive-through received – due to having too many mechanics during the pit stop working on the car. The driver from Como then overtook several cars as he could to reach the third position, handing the car off to Caldarelli.

Unluckily, a collision with a GTD car caused significant damage to their left suspension and forced the trio to retire. Therefore, Iron Lynx headed home without points but still aware of their pace, which almost allowed them to win, hoping for a better race in Road Atlanta, the final race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Endurance Cup in 2024. The event named “Petit Le Mans” will go underway on October 12th.
